This project focuses on the conservation of two forest hinge-back tortoises (Kinxys homeana and K. erosa) and African slender-snouted crocodile (Mecistops cataphractus). All three species are endemic to tropical Africa, and are considered critically endangered in the IUCN Red List. These species are typically associated with tropical forests, and K. homeana is endemic to the Guinean coastal forests. The conservation situation of these species is understood to have considerably deteriorated in the last two decades, due to widespread habitat loss and intensive harvesting for domestic consumption. These species are under immediate risk of extinction, because their populations are very much reduced even within protected areas. These species thus remain a hotspot, and there are no data on population sizes of these species inside corridors connecting distinct forest fragments, it should be a conservation priority to assess population size and demography of these species in such corridors as well as in remnant forest areas. This project aims to increase the capacity building of local communities for the conservation and management of threatened species, and to determine the local distribution and population density in relation to habitat type in the Cross River, in order to produce a management guide for these species and in order to enhance community conservation and management for the years to come. The project will be based on 3 activities: 1) . Population surveys and community management learning; 2) Bushmeat market surveys; 3) Data analysis and 4) Expansion and consolidation of BPC conservation education center in Uyo to create wider wildlife conservation awareness for endangered species with our nation currently witnessing the highest-level wildlife abuses and extirpation.
