Promoting organic farming in Dobi and Pagadna communities in Gwagwalada Area Council of FCT
Dobi and Pagadna are farming communities in Gwagwalada Area Council and characterized by heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Dobi and Pagadna have estimated population of 3000 and 1500 inhabitants respectively. Farming is the mainstay in both communities with have over 500 active farmers. The release of the chemicals into soil does not only disrupt the soil integrity but seep into water bodies of rivers and stream which are the main source of potable water for the community and a wider general public. The effect of chemical use has been documented to affect human and environmental health. This project aims to reduce the amount of chemical inputs used in agriculture in the target communities. The goal of this project is to reduce the emission of hazardous chemicals from farming activities into the environment in the target communities thereby improving human and environmental health. Project activities include: (i) Awareness creation through the media and community sensitizations (ii) Establishment of demonstration farms(iii)Training on production of organic pesticides (iv) Training on production of organic fertilizer (v)Planting of neem trees. The expected results of the projects are: At least 20% of the community members are aware of the dangers of hazardous chemicals from chemical farm inputs as well as ways of preventing or reducing exposure to these chemicals and 30% reduction in in the use of chemical inputs by farmers in the target communities.

Project Characteristics and Results
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
Advocacy visits to the communities will engage community leaders, women and youth groups, and farmers association. Communities will be expected to nominate people who will serve as liaison between the communities and the project team. WEP will also pay advocacy visits to the leadership of the Area Councils on a different date to inform them about this project and solicit for necessary support. At the Area Council, WEP will meet with the heads of Environment and Agricultural Units of the Area Council to get them key into this project of protecting the environment and human health.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
On disseminating the knowledge and lessons learnt on this project, we have planned to document all these in a video documentary which will be shared with relevant organizations and also published on line to share the knowledge and lessons from this project. Right from the beginning of the project, there will be continuous video recording of the activities which will later be edited to highlight the knowledge and lessons from the project. Apart from this documentary, lessons and knowledge from this project will be shared with different stakeholders though our online quarterly newsletters, website and social media platforms. This will also be shared verbally in different meetings of forum which WEP participate.
