Dobi and Pagadna are farming communities in Gwagwalada Area Council and characterized by heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Dobi and Pagadna have estimated population of 3000 and 1500 inhabitants respectively. Farming is the mainstay in both communities with have over 500 active farmers. The release of the chemicals into soil does not only disrupt the soil integrity but seep into water bodies of rivers and stream which are the main source of potable water for the community and a wider general public. The effect of chemical use has been documented to affect human and environmental health. This project aims to reduce the amount of chemical inputs used in agriculture in the target communities. The goal of this project is to reduce the emission of hazardous chemicals from farming activities into the environment in the target communities thereby improving human and environmental health. Project activities include: (i) Awareness creation through the media and community sensitizations (ii) Establishment of demonstration farms(iii)Training on production of organic pesticides (iv) Training on production of organic fertilizer (v)Planting of neem trees. The expected results of the projects are: At least 20% of the community members are aware of the dangers of hazardous chemicals from chemical farm inputs as well as ways of preventing or reducing exposure to these chemicals and 30% reduction in in the use of chemical inputs by farmers in the target communities.
