Establishment of Ethnobotanical Gardens : Revitalization of Traditional Herbal Medicinal Practices
Project goal:
To improve the community's social welfare and health care, through sustainable practices of traditional medicine system.
Project objectives:
1. To revive the positive sustainable traditional practice of using herbal medicines.
2. To ensure the continued existence of the local biodiversity (focus on medicinal herbs).
3. To improve the community's welfare through facilitation of marketing local products of traditional herbal medicines.
Activities to be carried out under project :
1. Preparation.
a) Establishing 2 (two) local nurseries and/or demplots
b) Providing initial stock supply of seedlings and/or saplings
2. Local training and education in the field.
a) Arid land management with multi-crops system
b) Pest and disease handling management
c) Post-harvest handling management
d) Production, distribution, and marketing management
Outreach Approach.
a) From Lus Doan: provision of initial stock supply of seedlings/saplings, training and education on cultivated land management, and on post-harvest skills.
b) From the project participants (40 - 50 families): production of labeled dried/semi-processed medicinal herbs, distribution of new seedlings to non-participants for their own production, seeds contribution to the initial nurseries to provide ready stock of seedlings bank.
4. Technical Assistance.
a) Cultivation techniques: seedling,, nursery, harvesting, and post-harvesting skills.
b) Small scale industry management: financing, reporting, administration.
5. Evaluation and Reporting.
Project Participants and/or beneficiaries :
1. Yayasan Lus Doan (YLD) staff.
2. Local community in Loon Hamlet, South East Maluku
Anticipated result of project :
1. 2 (two) local nurseries established as the main supplier of traditional medicinal plants in the area.
2. Resurgence of traditional practice on the use of herbal medicines.
3. Improved productive land management (and soil conservation) in the area.
4. Establishment of small scale home industry on agricultural products.
5. Improved local community's welfare through better health and income as a result of this project.
