Install Rainwater Harvesting Catchment Tanks at Access Tracks for Agricultural Food Security and biodiversity protection
The Alofi North Village Council is established under the Village Council?s Act 1967. It has five committee members elected every three years by the people of the village. The office bearers are
Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary and the Treasurer. The Village Council?s mission is
to ensure a safe and healthy wellbeing and maximize a quality of life for the people. The land and the sea are key elements essential for the supply of food resources for the people as well as generating some income for the families. One of the tasks of the Village Council is to provide resources and infrastructure to improve the food security aspects of the village and protect the biodiversity.
Bush fires have destroyed food crops, plantations and the biodiversity. There is no water supply in the bush areas for the farmers to use to put out the bush fires hence protecting the plantations and the biodiversity.
The Village Council in consultation with the farmers through village meetings have identified the need to install a number of water tanks at various locations closer to the plantations to harvest rainwater to be use to water the crops and vegetables and to put out bush fires before they can spread and do a lot of damage.
This proposal is to seek funds to install four or five water catchments tanks at key locations closer to the plantations and easily access by the community and the public. Eighty percent of the village farmers will be able to access the water supply.
The Village Council has the experience and expertise to carry out the installations of the water catchment tanks and complete the project on time. The Village Council and the community will contribute in kind labour support towards the project.
