Although the project did not set out to influence policy, it intended to advocate for organic, sustainable agro-ecology practices. It has achieved that and gained public attention in newspapers which has given more people information and a greater understanding of the work of KHG Demonstration in Moamoa.
Due to the project, facilities have expanded and are better equiped to receive school trips, where students learn the many varieties of crops that can be grown organically in their own back yards. All visits are conducted predominantly in Samoan.
To allow for inclusion across the community, materials have been provided to some households such as fencing wire and poles to avoid pests destroying the yields. This has increased participation within the community.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The KHG Demonstration Centre holds open days where locals can visit to learn new skills and methods to create or expand their own gardens. This is most often spread through word of mouth as information travels very quickly within communities and districts.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The KHG Demonstration Centre implemented training courses for local, young Samoans, to understand how to manage and maintain small-scale vegetable production, either for household use or to sell. Some have gained a fixed job for the KHG centre, while others have used the transferrable skills and best practices in jobs elsewhere. Families, schools and anyone who visits learn useful techniques to buid and maintain a vegetable garden, and there have been cases where local families have adopted the organic garden and are now selling produce, providing an alternative livelihood. They sell the excess food they produce on street stands and can earn over $100 WST per week.
The food that is grown at the Demonstration Centre is sold to local restaurants and resorts, which generates a good income for the centre to pay all its employees and keep it well maintained.
Notable Community Participation
The Moamoa KHG Demonstration Centre is open to all for educational visits, and a great emphasis has been put on inviting local primary and secondary schools, to ensure that the next generation of young Samoans can gain from the teaching and knowledge-sharing. It has been due to such site visits that a number of families have now implemented their own KHGs in their households. It was quickly realised by the management team in Moamoa that often the youth engagement was the most successful in spreading their simple but important message of increasing food security via the promotion of sustainable agro-ecology farming practices, and a continued effort will remain to educate the youth to sustain this beneficial outcome.
Replication of project activities
The clear success of this project has enabled keyhole gardens to be replicated throughout Samoa. People who adopt the sustainable practices of farming are reaping the benefits of increased food security for their families, as well as an increased disposable income.
Project sustainability
This project has informed and engaged thousands of people of all ages and genders within the local community and wider district. KHGs are common across Samoa now and the fact that people can attend the demonstration centre to learn new sustainable agro-ecology farming practices that can be replicated in their own households, ensures a long life-span of the project.
Policy Impact
This project is advocating for organic, small-scale gardens which can provide food for household consumption or to be sold generating an income. It is not intending on producing policy across Samoa.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
Throughout the project, different techniques are implemented by the KHG staff to identify which method produces the most efficient results. These are recorded and taught to any visitors (schools, locals, businesses).
Planning non gef grant
Whilst this demonstrates the benefits at a family level, benefits can be seen at an island level. Samoa consists of two main islands, Upolu and Savaii, and due to the project success of the Demonstration Centre in Moamoa, Upolu, a similar 2-acre centre has been implemented in Savaii. The two centres are now supplying local, organic and fresh produce to numerous resorts and restaurants across Samoa.
Gender Focus
Within the community, both men and women tend to the small garden patches they cultivate, however, this project aims at dispersing better techniques to both male and females who attend the KHG Demonstration Centre workshops or trainings, ensuring that they donot have to rely on anyone else to grow vegetables organically.
