Sustainable Ecosystem Management to Support Agroforestry, Agrotourism and Community Development in Vulnerable Communities in Portland and St. Thomas
There is widespread clearing of trees which removes important carbon sinks. In addition slash and burn practices are increasing the level of greenhouse gases released. This is contributing to local impacts such as reduced drought tolerance of lands. The area is being impacted by climate change effects such as higher temperatures, drought, flooding, and hurricanes. All of these have greater impact on vulnerable groups such as the young and elderly. The project seeks to improve sustainable management of resources to support the contribution of agro-forestry and agro-tourism to income

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
An important aspect of the project is the collection and storage of data on the survival of tress, soil parameters and organic matter content. Community members will be interviewed as the project progresses to assess their thoughts on the project; these will inform the implementation and document project information which will be disseminated at the JOAM organic conference to held in 2018. Communities will also participate in the annual Denbigh Agricultural show where project activities will be shared with participant across Jamaica.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The project goals and objectives will be communicated through community meetings, monthly meeting of the CDC and information will be shared publicly with church groups, schools and youth clubs in the surrounding communities. Key partners such as the JCDT, RADA and the SDC through their participation on the advisory committee and from providing training will also report on the project via their website and in their publications.
