Project Characteristics and Results
Project sustainability
A full project proposal was developed and approved for implementation. Other strategies will include: Events: An annual botanical event including a symposium with international participation by scientists involved in ethnobotany and biocultural collections. Registration fees for the symposium and use of exhibition space will generate income for the nonprofit. Trading: The nonprofit will also embark on publications for the educational component. Development of branded items will also generate profit, with a focus of highlighting plant biodiversity on the island and the demonstration of value added product. The development of plant-based items that can replace plastic products is being examined within a sustainable utilization protocol. Leaf plates is the first product under consideration which will add value to the selected plants and assist with the problem of disposal of plastic plates which are non-biodegradable. Donations/Grant funding: A fund-raising committee will be established and outreach conducted to secure donations and grant funding. Partners, governmental and private sector, will be engaged in the promotion and execution of special events. BERP will be exploring funding for a dedicated base at which components of its programme structure can be facilitated. The establishment of a resource centre, research site and an attached shop for branded conservation products, including the plastic replacement items and conservation honey would provide a base for important aspects of the programme.
Notable Community Participation
The engagement of schools for knowledge sharing within student bodies, as well as motivation for STEM studies and plant research are organisational goals.
