Community waste management, climate smart sustainable agriculture and Livelihood development
The Goal of the project
This project aim at developing local capacities in community waste management to prevent waste burning and building capacity of small scale farmers in organic vegetable production, waste segregation, recycle organic waste into compost, agroforestry, focusing on POPs alternatives natural methods to control pests.
The Specific Objective of the Project:
? *to develop sustainable farming and food security for 300 small scale rural farmers into economical enterprise
? to promote alternative livelihood options to women and the youth transforming them into viable community based groups and co-operatives
? *to recycle the organic waste into compost fertilizer
? *increase the knowledge about solid waste management and organic farming among famers
? *raise local awareness on the value and opportunities of composting through education in schools and public outreach
? To promote dry season vegetable farming
The above objectives will be met by establishing pilot demonstration sites to train the rural farmers and communities in waste management, compost preparation, organic food production and livelihood activities.
Expected Project Result:
? A demonstration site for waste segregation and organic waste compost preparation established
? Demonstration sites established in 3 rural communities(Fiaso, Forikrom and Tanoso) to train farmers in organic vegetable production
? The trained farmers will transfer their knowledge to other farmers using farmer led extension
? 90% of the trained farmers practicing in organic farming using compost fertilizer
? Alternative livelihood provided for at least 300 farmers, in vegetable production and beekeeping
? Economic tree nursery established at ABOFAP Office to train farmers
Expected outputs:
1. 50 youth trained in compost preparation at the demonstration compost facility at Forikrom
2. Income generation activities like tree nursery, beekeeping, dry season vegetable and agro-forestry promoted.
3. 25,000 economic tree nursery like cashew and mangoes to cover an area of 250 hectare distributed to farmers
4. Income generation activities like segregation and sales of recycled materials from mixed waste and marketability of bio-fertilizer promoted
5. Improve the nutritional well-being (of women and children) and income of subsistence rural farmers.
