Establishment of Mud Crab Farming at Coastal belt of Shah Bander
Establishment of Mud Crab Farming at Coastal belt of Shah Bander
Objectives and Goal
? Establishment of 5 acre crab-nursery within the mangroves including value chain development being potential economic and aqua cultural richness for the best ecosystem.
? Determine the status of and constraints to mud crab aquaculture and how to overcome challenges through improved practices
? Espouse Innovative tools and techniques for transferring technology through trainings and refreshers for targeted fisher communities for crab farming with mangroves (The environment shield)
? Awareness capacity building programs through exposure visit to encourage farmers to adopt new techniques and motivating farmers to adopt modern methods of crab fattening and culture process through demonstration plots

Activities
? Establishment of 4 acre crab ?Nursery at Shah bandar
? Provide trainings to 100 crab farmers for new tools of crab farming
? Access of 100 fish-farmers to crab development and value chain
? Exposure visit for 50 farmers
? Pre-Post scenario and poverty card measuring change

Establishment of 4 acre crab nursery

? With the help of fisher communities 4 acre of crab farming nursery will be established at targeted area of Shah bandar which has potential to sustain farms/Nursery through new techniques

Trainings and refresher for targeted 100 fish-farmers

Trainings and refreshers will be provided to 100 crab farmers in the project phase through including forming Fisher Community Groups (FCGs) that will include importance of crab fattening; characteristics, lifecycle, food habit, reproductive cycle, and breeding process of crab. The main objective of the training will be to disseminate the improved and effective method of crab culture that would lower crab mortality rate, reduce the cost of production and increase the income of the crab farmers. Training also included merits of examining and maintaining the water salinity level, and soil and water pH level of the ponds.

Exposure visit to encourage farmers to adopt new techniques
Motivating farmers to adopt modern methods of crab fattening and culture process through demonstration 1 unit plot. Demonstration plot will be set up at single unit farm of 5 Shahbandar specific location to motivate other farmers to adopt modern methods of crab fattening and crab culture by exhibiting positive impact of these techniques.

Three plot will be used to demonstrate the effects of doing crab fattening and crab culture using these methods and will exhibit the comparative durability.

Awareness sessions and information desk for targeted farmers
A referral and information desk will be set up at project office to ensure the farmers? access to any information pertaining to crab culture including technical and market related information. With the support of the project, leaflets with relevant information on crab culture process will be published for the farmers and have been distributed. Moreover, a Technical Officer and an Assistant Technical Officer regularly visit the farms for monitoring and provide necessary technical assistance.
