Developing a Sustainable Tree Bank Nursery of Indigenous Trees and Plants
Project Objectives:

? Establishment of Tree Bank of 25,000 Indigenous Trees and Plants.
? To empower individual farmers, community groups and schools through provision of indigenous tree and plants saplings for reforestation programs.
? To empower local farmers, communities and school?s children through training and literature on indigenous trees and plants.

Project Activities:

a. Purchasing and collecting indigenous seeds
b. To establish nursery of 25,000 indigenous trees and plants.
c. Land levelling and preparation.
d. To empower individual farmers, community groups and schools through provision of indigenous tree saplings for reforestation programs.
e. Production of Social Forestry Literature
f. Organizing Workshop and training on indigenous trees and plants.


Expected Project Deliverables:

The Indigenous Tree Seed Bank project is to;

? Address issues of sustainability in forest management and conservation by providing required saplings for planting trees.
? Curb climate change.
? Provide resistance to soil erosion and thus protect rich land areas.
? Promote water conservation.
? Agro-forestry would curb out food insecurity of which would also form the bases for income generation activities.
? Promote environmental aesthetics and landscaping.
? Schools will act as demonstration centers for community groups in livelihoods and sustainability issues, hence forming bases for training and capacity building.


Target beneficiaries:

The nursery sourced through the project will be used for Private, Public and Community land inform of reforestation, Agroforestry and other tree planting initiatives mainly involving community groups, schools and other organizations interested in tree planting in order to increase forest and tree cover both on private land owners as well as declared forest areas. Majority of the farmers targeted to benefit from saplings produced by this project are small holder private land owners and will have full control of the trees planted once they mature. Through this structure, landless and marginalized families will gain access to community lands like forests schools and farmland to plant trees.

In the initial stage these farmers will work collectively in groups in order to manage seedlings/saplings in nursery sharing labour and other required resources at this critical stage of nurturing tree seedlings. They will share the seedlings for transplanting. Each participating farmer will be responsible for any labour associated with seedlings transportation, transplanting and after care.
