The project was officially launched in January 2018 but activities on the ground could not take off till 2 months later due to the late receipt of funds with the local bank.

The project activities commenced with the selection of sites for implementation and the conduct of the first training sessions. The project sites consisted of 4 villages in the Kiang West District namely: Kuli kunda, Kantong kunda, Manduar and Batelling. From each village, 10 participants were selected to take part in the project. From the total of 40 participants selected, 24 were women and 16 were men.

The 40 participants were taken to the BeeCause Training Facility in Lamin village where they stayed for 5 days to do the 2 main modules of the course.

Module 1 consisted of Bee biology, catcher box construction techniques, techniques of capturing wild bee swarms and their transfer into hives, hive bating, the use of bee keeping materials such as suits, gloves, smokers, etc.

Module 2 consisted of sessions on Apiary preparation, KTB hive construction, hive management and maintenance, pest and disease control, honey and wax harvesting and processing techniques, basic plant biology, soap and body cream production.

A the conclusion of the 2 modules, each of the 40 participants were each provided with 3 Catcher boxes, 3 KTB hives and a set of equipment consisting of protective clothing, smoker, kits etc.

Aparies were established in the 4 project villages namely: Kuli kunda, Kantog kunda, Manduar and Batelling. Each apiary measured 25 meters by 25 meters and located within a nearby community forest. Each village was supplied with 30 KTB hives which were sited in the apiaries. The apariaries were fenced for protection and the vegetation around them were cleared to prevent bush fires burning the hives. Each village also received a set of bee keeping materials consisting of smokers, suits, gloves, and other materials.The total number of bee hives provided to the beneficiary communities was 120.

3, 222 seedlings consisting of Gmelina, Cashew, Moringa, Lime, Leucena, Flamboyant and Acacia which was contracted to a local CBO were raised and supplied to the grantee. The seedlings were then distributed among the 4 project communities of Kantong kunda, Batelling, Manuuar and Kuli Kunda where they were planted in the apaiaries in the month of August 2018. The survival rates were high as the rains were regular during the period.

In the second quarter of the project- training was conducted for each of the 4 project villages on food security and food preservation technology. In each village, 20 participants received the training and the topics covered were: soil management, composting, seed bed preparation, sowing techniques for vegetables, transplanting methods, vegetable production for year round gardening, food processing and preservation techniques specifically jam making, hot pepper source making.

- At the conclusion of the project in December 2018, a total of 34 hives were already colonised by bees and this number is expected to go up with the coming of the rains and the following season.
