- This project was aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity by using pollinator trees in the farming system with the purpose of increasing crop production. The idea of using pollinator trees on farmlands is to promote crop pollination mainly by bees and other insects which will directly result in increased crop production.

- The project had 4 main activities namely: Crop production, Nursery establishment, Bee farming and Bush fire control.

- For the crop production activities, the activity started with the identification and selection of 30 crop farmers from 5 villages in the district who would be participating in this component. Each of the 30 farmers had an average of 1.5 hectares and a few had more than that amount. A training programme of the 30 farmers on agroforestry was conducted and it included the use of pollinator trees to enhance crop production. The farmers would still continue to grow their usual field crops but in addition, they were provided with improved seeds of cowpeas, maize and groundnut. They were sensitized on the importance of mixed cropping as a way of diversifying their income sources and as safeguard against crop failures for various reasons.

- With the identification of the 30 participating farmers, a training programme on mix cropping was conducted to build their capacities in Agroforestry.

- On the nursery establishment component, a nursery was established at the ITC centre in Keneba to produce the required number of various tree species for the project.2, 000 cashew seedlings, 2, 000 Gmalina seedlings, 2, 000 leucena seedlings, 2, 000 Moringa seedlings and 500 Acacia albida were raised successfully. The seedlings were supplied to all the 30 participating farmers for agroforestry farming on their respective farmlands.

- As part of project activities, support ws provided to 5 community gardens for the production of vegetables mainly carried out by women farmers. Improved seed varieties of Okra, Pepper, Cabbage, Egg plants, Bitter tomates, pumpkin, Lettuce, carrots and Kohl rabbi were provided as start up inputs.

- Training was lso conducted for 30 farmers on the importance of bees in crop farming and how bees are effective pollinators for filed crops. The relationship between crop pollination and crop yields were discussed and how this can contribute to increasing incomes of rural farmers.

- Another training programme on vegetable production was conducted for 26 female and 4 male farmers which covered topics ranging from good seed selection to storage of produce at the end of the production line.

-120 KTB beehives were purchased and distributed among the 30 farmers from the 5 communities to practice bee keeping- one of the component of the project. From this amount, each of the 5 community gardens received 4 hives each. To protect the bee hives from bush fires, a training programme of bush fire control ws organised for 41 farmers (21 male and 20 female) in the village of Manduar assisted by The Department of Forestry office for Kiang West District which is based in the same village.The topics covered included: Types of forests and categories, Imporance of forests and the services they provide, Gambia Forest Management concept, participatory forest management concept, Forest policy and role of communities, Impacts of bush fires on forest on communities and livelihoods, Causes of forest fires nd effects on environment, Control and strategies of bush fires.
