Sustainable Community Biodiversity Conservation and Environmental Sanitation Project at Relha Community
The project site Relha community is located at the riverside of Jiqu River in Dongba township, Nangqian county, Qinghai province, where is the source of Yangtze River, Yellow River and Lancang River(Mekong River). Jiqu River is one of the two major tributaries of Lancang River. The average altitude is 4400m. It snows in 8 months a year. The community has over 1280 population with 120 households. The community has 28ha. of farmland and the main crops are barley, wheat and potato. The community's main income come from animal husbandry. The average income is $690 per year per capita.
60% area of the community is covered by sabina chinensis forest. There are 4 sacred mountains in the community with rich wildlife resources including snow leopard, blue sheep, white-lipped deer, Tibetan pheasant, brown bear and etc.
Main problems:
1. The community is lacking of scientific technology on biodiversity monitoring and systematic biodiversity management and conservation;
2. The young generation has lost the tradition and spiritual connection to natural environment;
3. The local pastoralists have little awareness on waste management and piled waste polluted the environment;
4.Community over harvest sabina chinensis forest for fuel;
5.Community's living over rely on natural resources
Solutions/activities:
1. Conduct baseline survey on community biodiversity and sacred mountains and lakes, facilitate to establish ICCA;
2. Implement conservation activities including setting up ICCA management sign, community waste management, creating bamboo plank to dry yak dung as fuel to reduce deforestation, organizing 'ecology festival' and conducting periodically patrolling;
3. Develop 'green livelihood' to enhance the community's sustainable development capacity including sustainable development planning, handicraft and Eco-tourism training;
4. Promote project result and if possible register ICCA.
Anticipated results:
1. community biodiversity and sacred mountains and lakes data collected; 15 people are trained on GPS and camera monitoring technology; about 1300 sabina chinensis conserved; 10133ha. of ICCA conserved; 1000 people's biodiversity awareness enhanced;
2. about 210 households participate in community waste management and 80% of them reduce the use of plastic products; 90% of community people stop cutting trees; 500 people obtained conservation knowledge through 'ecology festival';
3. 35 people are trained on sustainable livelihood and 10 women enhanced their capacity of sustainable livelihood development and 5 households started their Eco-tourism reception; participated households' income increased $385 per year;
4. about 1280 community member know ICCA and try to register their ICCA.
