Managing waste and chemicals for community wealth creation and sustainable environmental management in Banda Nkwanta within the Black Volta Basin
Managing waste and chemicals for community wealth creation and sustainable environmental management in Banda Nkwanta within the Black Volta Basin
The project seeks to build capacities of artisanal miners and local communities to reduce the use of mercury through the use of the vortex centrifugal method in gold amalgamation, reduce the release of POPs, ODS and other chemicals through improving the fuel plant developed for waste plastic to diesel/kerosene/gas generation to be environmentally friendly. The project will also conduct and share the findings of environmental and economic impact analysis for the plastic fuel and vortex plant.

Project Characteristics and Results
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
? Project performance and outputs to monitor progress of activities as planned in the annual work plans. Parameters to measure outputs include the following: Number of artisanal gold mining enterprises managing mercury and applying proven alternatives, the water quality of neighboring water resources close to mining pits. Number of artisanal miners trained on the bad effects of mercury use to their health and the environment. No. of target beneficiaries (gender, youth, local peoples, disaggregated) reached with awareness creation programs on harmful chemicals. ? Project intermediate results to monitor the progress of the indicators. Outcome indicators will measure change in the practice of the amalgamation process and how much mercury is being used. The proportion of artisanal miners who after the project have resolved to practice safe mining.
