Strengthening community capacity to effectively conserve the remaining Lake Piso Multiple Use Reserve
1.3.2 The project Objectives
The overall objective of this project is to reverse biodiversity decline and increase targeted communities? abilities to enjoy healthier environments, reduce climate change, wide range of economic opportunities, increase skills, and improve forest management and to secure their supports for conservation of the Lake Piso Multiple-Use Reserve.
To achieve the above goal, the following objectives are envisioned: 1) increase the understanding of biodiversity conservation through awareness in adjacent communities and; 2) conduct training and demonstrate sustainable livelihoods (Climate Smart agriculture) centers in two selected project sites (Torsor and Senbenhun).
OBJECTIVES:
I. Improve systematic environmental education and public information outreach on laws on forest resources in Liberia to enhance communities? understanding about rural development opportunities linked to biodiversity conservation around the site.
II. Strengthen capacity of existing community conservation groups to implement conservation actions in biodiversity management techniques and procedures and establish, train and empower community conservation culture troupes.
III. Increase local community in sustainable farming system and energy conservation- Train communities? members in Conservation Agriculture based on sustainable farming practices (Climate Smart agriculture) and effective and efficient energy conservation.
IV. To improve rural community skills by using snail rearing (micro-life stock production) to increase income as an exchange for their commitment to conserve LPMUR
Objective 1. Improve systematic environmental education and public information outreach on laws on forest resources in Liberia to enhance communities? understanding about rural development opportunities linked to biodiversity conservation around the site
Specific activities:
Activity 1.1: Hold sensitization meetings in the selected communities with stakeholders and local authorities including town, clan and paramount chiefs; CBOs, NGOs, women and youth groups to explain the project, objectives, activities and expected outcomes as well as inform them about their roles and responsibilities as to gain their supports and ensure that the project is participatory and result is sustained by communities.
Activity 1.2: Conduct environmental education and awareness campaign in selected communities using power point presentation and projection of films, storytelling follow by questions and answers in relation to biodiversity conservation tracked. This activity will increase understanding on policies and its implementation. The activity will be regular throughout the project implementation.
Activity 1.3: Disseminate information about the project through radios, the production of jingle, town criers and printed simple to read manuals. Billboards will be erected and displayed in strategic areas of the project locations with logos of all concerned parties indicated. T-shirts will also be printed and distributed among relevant participating communities during the project implementation and project communities meeting will be held at the end of each month.
Objective 2: Strengthen capacity of existing community conservation groups to implement conservation actions in biodiversity management techniques and procedures and establish, train and empower community conservation culture troupes.
Activity 2.1 Map out existing / establish cultural group in the project community: SEC will work with existing cultural troupe in the area with respect to their cultural practices or establish new conservation culture troupe.
Activity 2.2 Establish and train conservation troupes in the project community and empower them with tools and costume. SEC will train the group in conservation performances, design and virtual expression. The project will facilitate the governance structure (bye law and constitution) and provide drums, salsa, and costume.
Objective 3: Increase local community in sustainable farming system and energy conservation- Train communities? members in Conservation Agriculture based on sustainable farming practices (Climate Smart agriculture) and efficient energy conservation.
Activity 3.1 Train community in eco stove production and rehabilitate fish drying oven in Senbenhun and Robertsport: SEC will train four women groups in production of effective and efficient stove as enterprises for income generation. These groups will be formulated as full enterprises with the aim of supplying efficient stove to the market, their capacity will be built in production and empower with requisite materials as a startup kit (Build 5 kiln, galvanize sheet, pinots, etc.). 200 eco-stove will be produced and distributed.
Activity 3.2 Conduct training in sustainable vegetable production: The project will organize small profitable vegetables that sustain cash flow (Sweet pepper, onion, tomatoes and Carrot etc.). The project will train 100 small farmers in organic farming systems (Climate Smart Agriculture) and in production of local family farming system.
Activity 3.3 Establish enterprises from at least four vegetable including (tomatoes, carrot, Onion and sweet pepper) for packaging and labelling. SEC will identify existing small scale businesses in the vegetable within the communities or entrepreneurs engaging in the vegetable trade for support. These will be assessed, needs for scaling up to become viable enterprises identified and provided matching support to become sustainable. They will be provided business development trainings and preservative methods for value added produce. SEC will facilitate the opening of accounts and provide markets for their products. The businesses will be supported to undertake simple packaging as part of adding value to these vegetables such as clean and well labeled for sale to supermarkets and regional / International markets.
Activity 3.4 Establish functional market linkage for target community to ensure that adequate reliable information is available for their market interactions. This would include the establishment of an inventory or data of potential markets for particular commodity to allow for continued expansion of the market base. The project would also be undertaken to support the publishing of all market outlet to maximize the potential client base for farm tools, equipment?s and loan opportunities and other important goods and services.
Objective 4: To improve rural community skills by using snail rearing (micro-life stock production) to increase income as an exchange for their commitment to conserve LPMUR.
This project basically aims at eliminating hunger which is the critical manifestation of poverty and reducing pressure exerted on the forest for livelihood.
Activity 4.1 Conduct skills training in snail farming and micro-life stock production; Increasing women?s skills with the techniques of snail rearing while snail source foods are considered the most effective means of treating moderately malnourished children as it is an iron- and protein-rich food source. The project will involve three (3) women groups within three (3) communities, Sixty (60) women and girls will be trained in snail rearing. Snail?s spices will be caged to provide protection from predators and to create an environment to promote easy rearing. Every women group will be rearing 40 snails (15 male and 25 female) per cage, purchased by the project for a start. Thirty 30 cages will be constructed for the rearing of twenty (20) snails per cage and ten (10) cages per group.
Activity 4.2 Facilitate business management and marketing skills. The skills training will improve family incomes and increase nutritional levels, thereby reducing infant death cases and also help families manage merger incomes properly. The project will provide quick return on money, time and effort through sales providing the right feed, correct care aiming at 200 eggs produced by each snail per month. Harvesting of snails will be done after six (6) months thereby allowing then to mature properly.
