Seychelles School Marine Education Programme
WiseOceans Seychelles is restarting marine education programmes in both primary and secondary public schools, with the aim to support and enhance understanding of the marine environment amongst Seychellois teachers and students. The Seychelles boasts one of the largest EEZ in the region with 1.4m sq km of sea of which 15% is under protected status. A basic knowledge of the environment and how it is threatened is essential for effective conservation. WiseOceans Seychelles, in partnership with the Department of Education, aims to increase marine knowledge by conducting marine educational activities targeting the core of Seychelles? education system: its schools. The proposed activities will comprise marine education lessons and field trips for students, Professional Development workshops for teachers, the researching of current marine teaching materials and the opening of a marine education helpline for teachers.
Through this programme we will increase community landscape and seascape conservation by increasing knowledge and awareness, and create a successful example of marine education in schools, which could be of use to the Department of Education in the future when they revise the national science curriculums as well as other subjects, also to encourage youth in taking up marine ? related jobs in the future.
