Community Stewardship and Water Replenishment Program
This proposed project aims to contribute toward community stewardship and replenishment of water to enhance life quality and promote ecological integrity that benefits both man and nature.
The proposed project is in line with GEF SGP theme ?Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change? with the ability to deliver demonstrative impact in the area ?Livelihoods, Sustainable Development, and Empowerment?. The project will also demonstrate development dividends across multiple sectors, Drawing the integrated approach from the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, the proposed project aims to deliver benefits across three people centric goals directly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (No Hunger, and SDG 6 (Water for All), one planet related goal (SDG 13 Climate Action) and indirectly contribute towards SDG 3 (health) and SDG 4 (education). The project is also aligned with Article 7 of the Paris Agreement to support global goal on adaptation of enhancing adaptive capacity, strengthening resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change with a view to contributing to sustainable development. Climate adaptation with water sector is also prioritized in Pakistan?s Nationally Determined Contribution (Pak-INDCs) which recognizes that adaptation actions to protect vulnerable groups, communities and ecosystems guided by best available science making use of local knowledge and indigenous practices to integrate adaptation into socio-economic and environmental actions that build resilience of communities and ecosystems.
The specific objectives of the project are
? Build community stewardship of water resources to enhance socio-economic and environmental wellbeing through value creation and replenishment benefits
? Align and demonstrate replenishment benefits across multiple people centric Sustainable Development Goals particularly SDG1 (No Poverty), SDG2 (No Hunger) and SDG 6 (Access to Water).
? Develop community capacity to cope with climate induced hazards and to manage natural resources with active role of women in decision making
? Facilitate synergistic linkages between local authorities and local community for climate compatible development
? Promote harmony between human activity and nature for sustainable development.
Activities to be carried out under project:
To achieve these objectives the project will undertake following activities
? Engaging community to build consensus with all stake holders on project objectives, methodology and sustainability through participatory dialogue and meetings
? Formation of community organization through a broad based, representative, transparent, and a socially inclusive process that ensures 50% inclusion of women in decision making.
? Building capacity of community to plan, implement, monitor and manage project activities from inception to completion and post completion through workshops
? Developing technical feasibility and environmental mitigation measures to ensure socio, economic and environmental integrity of project deliverables through technical assessment
? Developing technical design for construction of water infrastructure for irrigation and replenishment
? Disseminating information on effective management of water resources and raise awareness on the role of women & youth in water stewardship, management of natural resources, health, hygiene and gender empowerment
? Organizing coordination meetings between local authorities and local communities to develop synergistic linkages for climate compatible development.
