Biodiversity Conservation for Vulnerable Rural Livelihood Improvement in Nga District, Oudomxay Province, Lao PDR
Nga is the poorest district of Oudomxay province, most of villagers in this 5 villages: Meungnga, Phonekham, Mai, Nakhok, Houylieng are ethnic minority who are living in farther areas with poor access road, so they have the lack of opportunity to participate in commercial crop production in form of contact farming and small holder. Their livelihood still keeps practicing on traditional shifting cultivation for food security even though it produces low productivity, reduce forest areas, cause soil erosion and destroy water sources, although it is attempted to stabilize by the local and central government. Consequently, it is extremely necessary to explore the requirements, constraints, and potential capacity of vulnerable households in those 5 villages to support them engage in commercial cash crops production especially cardamom and galangal. On the other hand, their livelihood is still relying on the climate facilitation, they sometimes face drought, so it can summarize that their livelihood is not sustainable because they rely on a single type of agricultural practice. Therefore, the aims of project are to support and facilitate vulnerable households in rural upland areas generate income through commercial cash crop production like cardamom and galangal for export, because these products are in high demand by neighboring markets. At the same time, it will help them stabilize shifting cultivation, increase forest cover to protect land degradation, erosion, and increase biodiversity.
