Climate Smart Rice Production in Phaketu Village, Nongbok District, Khammouane Province
Ban Phaketu is one of 55 villages which is under the governance of Nongbok district, total population is 434. Most of villagers are doing paddy farming as a main occupation, fishing and livestock is as their backup career. There are 149 hectares of paddy rice farm area in village, 69 hectares is risky to be flooding, 56 hectares of rainy season rice production and irrigation rice production have produced 4 tons/hectare, total earning around 2,000,000 Kip per family per year. Ban Phaketou has established agriculture production group and extend varieties quality rice, which has approval from district governor of Nongbok on July 25, 201. Nowadays, environment has changed and it directly impacts to agriculture production especially rice production in negative way. Flooding and drought are the main trouble on rice production in rainy season ruin to the rice production from 10 - 100%. For the rice production in dry season is facing on irrigation insufficient and irrigation price is also expensive, which make production cost high and result to rice farm in dry season is less or loss benefit. Moreover, most of farmers are using chemical fertilizers and pesticides in over amount, which make the direct and indirect impacts to villagers especially the producer and consumer as well to the environment in short and long term. Therefore, the project aims to help the farmers in target area by using modern technology in rice production and it can help to relief of impact from climate change. Giving knowledge to farmer about the side effect from chemical fertilizer then farmer will understand and reduce using chemical fertilizers further more to stop using in the future and the environments in ecosystem will also be clean.
