Climate Smart Agriculture for Improved Food Security: A Landscape Approach in Savannakhet Province of Lao PDR
Champhone district, Savannakhet Province is a predominately agricultural-based community, where 90% of villagers are mainly engaged in rice paddy cultivation. There are two main seasons in Laos: The rainy season and the dry season. Traditional wet rice cultivation and grazing of livestock are the main agricultural activities in the area, supplemented by fishing and gathering of non-timber forest and wetlands products. The farmer in Champone District suffer from seasonal flooding every year. Although the land is not seriously damaged by the extreme flood event almost all products (crop, livestock, and fish) are affected (e.g., strong Nock Ten typhoon in 2011 caused a deep flood and damaged rice and livestock production in this area). Meanwhile, pest and disease outbreaks during the wet and dry seasons are common problems for crops, livestock, and fishery production. However, the problems occur differently from year to year. Outbreaks of golden snail, blast, stem rot, sheath blight, foot rot and sheath rot often happened in the district and being still an agrarian economy with rice as the major crop the impacts of climate change are visible among farmers in the regions. Without proper available information and knowledge on climate change adaptation, the adaptive capacity of the farmers to deal with climate variability and change remains low. Therefore, the aims of project are at improving the livelihood of farmers from climate resistant practices to climate resilient farming practices by the following ways: introduce climate smart and resilient farming practices at both landscapes to help farmers in adapting to climate change; will do a season long farmers field school to introduce climate smart agricultural practices through a demonstration on fields leading to the improved capacity building of the farmers; moving from climate-smart agriculture to climate-smart landscapes. Landscape interventions are designed to achieve multiple objectives, including human well-being, food and fiber production, climate change mitigation, and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services. The key role of local communities and households as both producers and land stewards will be acknowledged; and includes Participatory processes of social learning and multi-stakeholder negotiation is institutionalized, including efforts to involve all parts of the community and ensure that the livelihoods of the most vulnerable people and groups are protected or enhanced.
