*Note: Originally LAO/SGP/OP6/Y3/STAR/CH/2018/58
Lao Ngam District, Salavan Province, good soil is an asset for excellent agriculture practice which contributes to employment and provides raw materials for agro-based industries. The agricultural sector is dominated by smallholder mixed coffee farming, banana, livestock, food crops, cash crops, fishing and aquaculture. Lao farmers in Saravan Province have been long practicing traditional farming using indigenous knowledge related to sustainable farming remains. In the past, this type of farming does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides and can be considered as ?Organic?. However, there has been an increasing use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides with some pesticide companies encouraging the use of these harmful products with interest-free loans and promises of higher yields. Under-nutrition and food insecurity remain high in Saravan Province. Therefore, improving women?s nutrition is critical to breaking the intergenerational cycle of under-nutrition and given the negative impact that chronic undernutrition has on health, productivity, educational attainment and income-earning, its redress is essential to sustain national economic growth. The aims of projects will target in three villages: Dongbang, Temesangthong and Khanouan, Lao Ngam District, Salavan Province. This district is among the poorest districts in the country. Women specific-training programs are needed to build women?s capacity to participate in organic and sustainable farming. Training needs to include the handling of machinery, as well as business skill, post-harvest processing.
