Demonstration Project on Snow Leopard Landscape Conservation at the Source of Lancang River
The project site is located in the core habitat of Snow Leopard in Sanjiangyuan National Park. According to the scientific monitoring, 27 snow leopards was found within 1000km2 area in 2015. Meanwhile, the human-animal conflict is outstanding due to predator such as snow leopard preying livestock.
Main problems:
a. Wildlife causes significant economic losses to herders and the conflicts between humans and wildlife are serious. The practical case of solving conflict between people and animals is in urgently needs.
b. The amount of compensation can only make up for part of the loss of herdsmen, and new ecological products are needed to continuously benefit the local people's protection activities.
Solutions/activities:
1. pilot human-animal conflict foundation to carry out beforehand prevention training and afterwards compensation;
2. Design 'snow leopard natural experience' eco-tour based on community infrared camera monitoring;
3. Provide training for the locals on eco-tour and pilot' 'snow leopard natural experience' eco-tour;
4. Organize workshop on human-animals conflicts compensation and natural experience and develop case studies and practice guideline on human-animal conflict compensation mechanism for dissemination.
Anticipated results:
1. 672 herdsmen compensated for the loss of livestock that preyed by wild animals and community tolerance of predators increased and the risk of retaliation killings reduced;
2. at least 15 households trained with capacity of developing Eco-tour. By 2019, the average annual household income increased at least 6,000 yuan;
3. the number of snow leopard populations in the region maintained and the their habitat protected;
4. two case studies on human-animal conflict foundation and snow-leopard Eco-tour and the procedures and guideline of human-animal conflict foundation completed and disseminated.
