Community-based Ecological Protection Project in Animaqin Sacred Mountain
Baseline information
Animaqin snow mountain is located in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau? which is the most important head-stream of the Yellow River and holds the biggest glacier in the Yellow River Basin. Animaqin is also one of the 9 most important sacred mountains for Tibetan people's spirit and religion belief. There are lots of sacred lakes and wetland surrounding the mountain, which provide ecosystem service to the 107million people downstream. There are rich wildlife here including snow leopard, brown bear, lynx, Tibetan fox, Tibetan wild ass,Tibetan gazelles, Bar-headed Goose, black-necked crane and so on.
Main problems:
1. Illegal mining and various construction projects such as freeway construction and tourism development damage Animaqin Sacred Mountain;
2. Due to the loss of traditional culture, the traditional ecological conservation knowledge and traditional culture have been marginalized for a long time, which has weakened the traditional conservation activity. And the recent surge of people who worship at Animaqin sacred mountain has brought an unprecedented impact on the ecology of the region;
3. Waste pollution is a big issue due to visitors increasing and lacking of conservation awareness and capacity.
Solutions/Activities:
1. Establish a sacred mountain and lake protection alliance, conduct baseline survey and develop a community-based sacred mountain and lake management system;
2. Support the communities to develop sacred mountain conservation action plan and provide capacity building to the communities to implement the conservation action plan;
3. Work with farmer's cooperative to develop sacred mountain cultural and natural experience tour to increase local income and sustain the conservation activities.
Anticipated results:
1.A sacred mountain conservation alliance established, 15 members trained with technology and skills;
2. A sacred mountain database established including 30 mountains' information covering 3772km2;
3. An area of 300km2 protected including water source and key species habitat and 425 people involved;
4. 5 eco-tour reception station established and the local's income increased1000-2000RMB.
