Sustainable land management and promotion of local agro-biodiversity for food security in Digala
The project is being implemented in one of the remote chiwog under Bardo Gewog in Zhemgang Dzongkhag. It falls under GEF-UNDP SGP?s landscape: Lower Manas Basin landscape area for Operational Phase 6 (OP6) strategic plan. Digala village (400-800 m) under Bardo gewog has about 35 household 300 individuals. It is 2 hours walk from nearest road point Ringdibi which is connected form Lower Kheng (Zhemgang) The Sub-block has a forest cover of about 90% with rich biodiversity.. The Block center is located in Khomsar which is 8 hours walk form Digala. Communities mostly depend on subsistence farming, rearing livestock and depend heavily on Non-Wood Forest Product (NWFP) collected from the nearby forest. Maize, millet, foxtail, potato and paddy are the main source of livelihood, however, human wildlife conflict and soil erosion are most common issues faced by the communities. The village is well connected by electricity and yet to be connected with the farm road.
Rationale and Justification
There is high incidence of poverty in the Chiwog and the rationale behind is to address the poverty in the region contributed by factors such as agricultural land degradation, land fragmentation, high gradient agriculture land, labor shortage, low knowledge on land management and crop depredation by Human Wild-life Conflict (HWC). Also, being a remote area access to basic infrastructure and nearest market has always been a challenge. Especially for Digala chiwog the road connectivity is a far long dream and people of the chiwog experience numerous problems.
Among many issues the most prevalent are lack of proper agriculture land management which has adversely affected to food in self-sufficiency among family members which is worsen by wild-life attack. Wild boars are the most frequent visitors that damages the crops. The farmlands being located in stiff gradient almost of 450 in some part of the area the loss of soil nutrients to erosion is uncontrolled phenomena and crop production has been almost impossible often.
Therefore, through this project intervention it is greatly expected to contribute to capacity building of farmers through various training programs on agriculture land management techniques and agro-ecological farming. The project will also provide skill on innovative climate resilient agro-ecology farming methods which is expected to contribute towards stable food production and address food security in the area.
Project Objectives
The issues are also reflected from SGP country program strategy for OP6.
The overall objective of the project is to Reduce agriculture land degradation and food insecurity by promoting appropriate (climate resilient) agriculture land management practice and agro-ecological based farming system.
Specific objectives:
Objective 1: To support and empower farmers on the basics of agriculture land management and principles (terracing, crop rotation, inter-cropping, mulching, vermicomposting, bio pesticides, hedge row plantation etc)
Objective 2: To support farmers to integrate agro-ecological farming approach for efficient land management and agroforestry basics in their farmlands.
The project intends to address problems such as food insecurity, soil fertility and soil management through agro-ecological farming and participatory action among farmers.
Project activities includes project introduction, introducing concept of agriculture land management & agro-ecology farming, post training programs, M&E, support program to farmers, introduction of bio-gas, farmers? award, agro-forestry program, knowledge sharing program.
