"Integrated agroforestry and pest management in farmer field schools for improvement of agro ecosystems in The Gambia".
This project aims to use the Farmer Field School approach in promoting ecological sustainable practices to address the challenges posed by the use of pesticides in agriculture and the need for the adoption of Integrated Pest Management and Agroforestry in farming. The FFS approach can be simply described as a field participatory learning environment where small groups of farmers meet regularly in their fields to exchange knowledge and experience, experiment and discover better ways to achieve increased and sustainable agricultural production and improved livelihoods.
The specific objectives of the project are:
1. To empower farmers with knowledge and skills to increase their agricultural production to achieve improved sustainable livelihoods
2. Sharpen farmers capacity and ability to make informed and critical decisions that make agricultural production profitable
3. Sensitize farmers on new ways of thinking and managing problems
4. Strengthen the capacity of farmers to organize themselves and to support their communities
5. Enhance relationships and partnerships between farmers, agricultural extension agents and researchers to work together in testing, evaluating and adopting a variety of agricultural technology options within their specific agro ecological environment
