Establishing a system for collecting electrical and electronic waste and waste batteries in Polog region
The proposed project will contribute to the protection of human health and the environment. The main objectives of this project are to protect soil, water and air pollution caused by current management of WEE and WB and to reduce environmental damage from WEEE and WB. The proposed project aims to preserve valuable resources, particularly energy, which in the EU are governed by the WEE and ROHS directive. The project aims to achieve a wide range of measures, including measures for places for separate collection of WEE and WB, treatment of WEE and its processing and the inclusion of the informal sector in the sustem for proper waste managemen. The current practice in Macedonia is that this waste is collected form marginal group of citizens, mostly Roma populations who improperly handle it and endanger their health and the health of the general population. Usually this waste is burning to get a little copper or other metal, outdoors, and thus emit uncontrolled emissions of dioxins and furans into the air, which is proved as very carcinogenic. The purpose of this project is to help this group of citizens, to be engaged in an organized system of collecting this waste, which improve social status, and simultaneously create jobs in recycling centers. In addition, there will be energy savings for using recycled metal and reducing the impact on climate change. The ultimate goal is to protect the environment and human health.
