Tranch 1. procurement of office equipment was a priority during phase one implementation.
i) Model Piggery Shed Construction
Activity undertaken was milling of planks and timbers for the piggery shed. With able assistance from the CBO NGO partner with iron sheet, cement, nails and logistics, the piggery shed has been completed in last month, October, 2018.
Completion of the new permanent piggery shed will enable the CBO to breed and raise high quality pigs for sale to support the CBO and caretakers and to train the community on modern pig husbandry at the village level.
ii) Model Vegetable and Garden Food Farm
From technical assistance provided by Fresh Produce Development Agency with training and start-up kit to pilot the project model farm, the Fagagara Development Foundation Inc. was able to build the Mt. Idau Model Vegetable and Garden Food Plot. Basic farming and gender training has been conducted by the Fresh Produce Development Agency for the community at Mt. Idau. Training participants were from Mt. Idau and Korona villages. Further training on post- harvest and financial literacy is planned for November or December, 2018. First sales of chinese cabbage from the model farm at Mt. Idau has been made with assistance from NGO partner to do trial sales in Port Moresby. Proceed from the sales has been used to buy new seedlings and to maintain the model farm.
Expansion of the vegetable and garden food project into Korona and Totona is pending depending on CBO ability to source further technical assistance from UNDP GEF SGP to procure start-up kit for eligible farmers for the two villages and liaising with NGO partner and Fresh Produce Development Agency for assistance with extension, training and marketing support.
The community in Korona have already gone ahead and constructed a nursery and prepared land for their pilot vegetable and garden food farm and are now waiting for Fagagara Development Foundation Inc. to secure assistance from UNDP GEF SGP, Fresh Produce Development Agency or NGO partner for start ? up kit to venture into vegetable and garden food project as full-time occupation.
Tranch 2.a) Organizational strengthening during tranch 2 was a key milestone achieved, with strengthened partnerships achieved, conduct of trainings to select community members, a draft MOU was submitted to local District and provincial municipalities to engage more and for project sustinability under the 5 year District development Plan.
b) - It is anticipated that a further two and a half hectares of logged over area will be added on for replanting once seedlings currently propagated at the nursery are ready for transplanting by July 2019 bringing to five hectares the total area of the logged over area to be reforested.
- The reforested site will be utilized as ?Native Tree Park and Seed Bank? for ecological, climatic, educational, scientific, social and recreational purposes and benefits for the community and all concerned stakeholders.
- The initiative is making an impact on the community perception and understanding on REDD+ as a development option
c) i) Model Vegetable and Garden Food Farm
Expansion and extension of Mt. Idau Vegetable and Garden Food model farm and sourcing of assistance from NGO partner for tools, seeds and materials to establish Korona village community vegetable and garden food farm.
Arrangement for continuation of training on basic farming, gender, post- harvest and financial literacy with Fresh Produce Development Agency.
ii) Training on Inland Fish Farming
A two weeks training on inland fish farming was attended by Fagagara Development Foundation Inc. coordinator and a participant from Totona village.
The training was facilitated by the Central Fisheries Division and hosted by leading fish farmer in Central province at his farm at Sirinumu Reservoir.
The training has enabled the participants to gain valuable skills and knowledge on how to engage in fish farming for food security and income generation at the community level.
Training skills and knowledge gained will be utilized to help community develop fish farm to supplement protein supply and generate income at the community level.
It is envisioned that the inland fish farming initiative will contribute towards replenishing fish stock in the local river and creeks flowing through the Inaina WMA as currently experienced from with declining fish population and scarcity from overfishing by landowner population and community.
