Cultivate 30ha of Barren Paddy Fields Abandoned for Decades, with Traditional Paddy Varieties and 10ha of Koratu Lands with Vegetable Crops in Walpita Wetlands of Homagama Agrarian Division by Local Farmers.
Walpitiyaya field site in Homagama Agrarian Division is a well grown paddy field in the past has been abandoned for decades and not cultivated paddy for many years. The fields are grown with invasives and irrigation water canals are filled with mud due to long term negligence and farmers are not in a position to remove the invasive due to their long growth and lack of financial resources. Most of the lands are sloping lands where farmers grow vegetables and other crops for their income but are degraded due to lack of maintenance and soil erosion. The proposed project is expected to clear the 30ha. field along with 1.5km long water access canals in the paddy fields and cultivate traditional varieties of paddy and promote self employment opportunities and to ensure conservation of bio-diversity in the Walpitayaya.
