Enhancing forest conservation through agro-forestry practices around Jozani-chwaka Bay National park in Zanzibar
Enhancing forest conservation through agro-forestry practices around Jozani-chwaka Bay National park in Zanzibar
Context:

Studies have shown that poor agricultural returns and lack of viable alternative income generating options are the main factors that contribute to deforestation and forest degradation around Jozani Forest ecosystem (Ali & Leskinen, 1997). Resource depletion is accelerated for wood fuel, lime, building poles, boats making and agriculture. 70% of wood fuel consumed in Zanzibar urban is sourced from Jozani (Jambiya 2004). This project aims at promoting agro-forestry and smart agriculture practices to increase returns to small holder farmers. This will increase food production and income both of which will go a long way towards enhancing forest conservation around Jozani National Park.

About the Proponent:

Jozani Environmental Conservation Association (JECA) is an NGO. It was established in 1998 and registered in May 1999. JECA operations are mainly focused in Central and South Districts of Unguja. Its areas of expertise include agriculture, Natural Resources Management, environment conservation and climate change. In 2014, the NGO implemented successfully a smallholder Agricultural Development Programme around Jozani National Park through UNDP/SGP support. Other partners that have worked with JECA in the past include CARE Tanzania, Mc Knight Foundation, Foundation for Civil Society and WWF.

Project?s Primary Objective:

To contribute to enhancing conservation of forestry through wider adoption of agroforestry and smart agriculture initiatives for increased food and incomes to local communities around Jozani National Park.
