REPLICATION OF SCHOOL WASH IN ZANZIBAR
Context:
The UN in Tanzania is keen to see the Zanzibar Government reach its goals through MKUZA III. Clean water and sanitation in schools is one of the goals. The UN believes that a healthy student has a better chance of performing well in school. WASH in schools are critical to ensure that students are healthy. More importantly, WASH ensure that girl students do not miss classes during their periods. The WASH conditions in Zanzibar schools are pathetic. For example, while the Government standard for toilet per student is 1 to 20 for girls and 1 to 25 for boys, the ratio for Kaskazini A is 1 to 143 for girls and 1 to 278 for boys. Under this project, model latrines will be built in two primary schools (one in Unguja and another one in Pemba) and one Secondary School in Unguja. UNDP Country Office plans to increase this number by 8 schools next year 2018 so that there will be 10 schools with model school latrines. The project objective is to encourage Zanzibar Government and other stakeholders to scale up the model latrines in all parts of the Islands.
Project?s Primary Objective:
To improve WASH conditions in Zanzibar Schools through demonstrating model school latrines for wider adoption in the Islands.
Implementation Strategies:
1. Sponsor 10 Headteachers and 5 Education officers for study visit to Kilimanjaro where model latrines were supported by UNDP in 2016
2. Adopt Government Standard Designs
3. Ensure there are facilities for disabled students
4. Empower school Parents? committees to supervise implementation of model latrine projects
