Improving the urban environment by developing and testing low cost sanitary solutions for Namibia's informal settlements.
The project aims on providing the first ever structured analysis of alternative sanitation solutions in Namibia?s informal settlements, identification of best practices, and implementing those best practices on a significant scale in informal settlements.

Field research will be conducted in informal settlements of seven sample towns and participatory testing of modelled sanitary solutions will be done with the involvement of local residents and authorities in three towns.

Project Characteristics and Results
Replication of project activities
Based on the project results, is being replicated in the larger setting of the Windhoek informal settlement sanitation programme, implemented by the DWN and the Namibia Chamber of Environment through the funding of UNICEF. It will benefit close to 140,000 beneficiaries.
Policy Influence
The local authorities of the three towns where the project was implemented have supported the project and are actively promoting the low cost sanitation. It has become an integral part of the low cost land for housing.
