Dil-Ngebuked Sustainable Livelihoods Project
Dil-Ngebuked Sustainable Livelihoods Project
Over the past ten years the County of Ngebuuked in Ngaraard State has seen a significant decline in production of its taro patches. The women of the community speculate that this is due to decreased water flow from upstream watershed. They also feel that the decline in rural population (transition from dependence on traditional subsistence practices (farming and fishing) to modern economy) has led to a decrease in manpower needed to maintain waterways that feed into the taro patches. This has directly impacted crop yields, food sovereignty, income generation and livelihoods of the women and their families.

Dil-Ngebuked Sustainable Livelihoods Project aims to study and foster best practices in agro-ecology and apply these principals to enhance resiliency and ecological, socio-economic and cultural sustainability of taro patch farming methods and systems in their community. This project would address SDG Strategic Initiative of supporting indigenous communities in their stewardship of landscape through sustainable land management of agriculture production systems. It would also promote the collective management of water systems contributing to sustainable use and maintenance of watershed ecosystems services used for agriculture.
