Safeguarding the Degraded Land along the Kamala River Basin and Enhancing the Livelihood Initiatives
Safeguarding the Degraded Land along the Kamala River Basin and Enhancing the Livelihood Initiatives
Nepal loses 24 crore metric ton of fertile soil annually to Bay of Bengal due to soil erosion and flooding. Interestingly, it requires 34,300 ton chemical fertilizers and 100-400 years to form 1 cm of soil naturally whereas it takes 300-1200 years to form 1 cm of fertile soil. Hence, regaining soil fertility is complex and very long process. Due to the deforestation, 60 thousand ha land is converted into desert each year (ICIMOD, 2009).

The proposed implementation site is located in Dudhauli Municipality of Sindhuli District. Dudhauli lies in the South-east part of the District which is 80 Km far from the District Headquarters and 20 km north from the Mahendra Highway. Dominated by the Danuwar and Mushahar ethic groups, the Dudhauli valley is formed by the Kamala river. Because of the deforestation in the valley, landslides at the upstream, heavy flooding followed by riverbanks cutting, frequent changing of river courses, river bed rise due to siltation further degraded the land. It has been reported that the bed of the Kamala Rivers has raised by 0.20 m per year in recent years (DDC, 2013).

Thus the project aimed to minimize river cutting, reclaim land from the flood, promote organic farm and other livelihood opportunity.
