Mabudi and Sabon-Gida communities, Langtang South LGA of Plateau State have a total population of 45,116 people by the 2006 census Agriculturally, it is one of the richest parts of the state; hence the community members are predominantly farmers. Barytes and Clay are mineral resources also found in abundance in the LGA. In spite of this, resource-related ethno-religious conflicts and yearly floods have destroyed lives and properties. Global warming and deforestation due to firewood consumption have caused disruption in rain pattern and multiplicity of pests. The soil is depleted due to overuse of land, inappropriate application of inorganic fertilizers and erosion. Herbicides and chemical use for agriculture have left chemical residues in foodstuff and polluted the water sources. Limited access to safe water, dependence on open ponds, low level of awareness on hygiene, open defecation and sharing of ponds with animals have lead to high rate of water-borne diseases, loss of time in search of water, conflict over access to water, high rate of snake bites in search for water, and farming limited to rainy season leading to poor vegetation and food insecurity. This project seeks to build capacity of target households and communities to mitigate the impact of climate change and land degradation. Proposed project activities include formation of Project Management Committee of 20 people (including women, youth, vulnerable caregivers and traditional leaders) nominated by community members, train-the-trainer on improved stove making, cashew and palm tree planting/management, formation and training/coaching of Community Environmental Protection Taskforce (CEPT) for proper waste management and water recovery/protection, training the trainer workshop for 200 caregivers on improved practices on agriculture, production and distribution of IEC materials, and lessons learnt workshop.
