Hot water pasteurization of substrate for oyster mushroom farming
In Nepal, mushroom farming is mostly concentrated in peripheral areas around major urban centers such as Kathmandu valley, Pokhara and Narayanghat. The average production is about 8 - 10 tons per day. It was estimated that approximately one kilogram of firewood is consumed to produce one kilogram of fresh oyster mushroom in traditional sytem? steaming the substrate in a drum using firewood. Thus, in order to produce 8 ? 10 tons of mushroom per day, 8 to 10 tons of firewood is consumed every day. The project tries to demonstrate solar water heater based oyster mushroom substrate pasteurization and replace the conventional method.

Project Characteristics and Results
Project sustainability
From the very beginning, the project partnered with Natural Nutritious Agro Product, Clean Energy Walk in Learning Center and Krishna Grill & Engineering Works P LTD for the production of solar heater based substrate pasteurization to produce organic oyster mushrooms. Except for the vacuum tube solar water heater units, all the machineries and accessories such as pasteurization vat with interior, substrate container with chain pulley are designed and manufactured locally by Krishna Grill & Engineering Works P LTD. Thus the project ensured that, the system could locally be manufactured and locally repaired if need be. The Clean Energy Walkin Learning Center has provided ideal demonstration site where one can easily observed and learn the process of pasteurization and mushroom production. Natural Nutritious Agro Product, on the other hand, is responsible for marketing of the mushroom.
