Pesticide management in Jenin, Hebron and Jericho

The project main aim is to raise farmers awareness on the negative impacts of extensive use of pesticeds.
The main project activities are:
1-Select 3 target areas for each governorate (Hebron, Jericho, and Jenin).
2-Conduct 3 induction workshop in Hebron, Jericho and Jenin to introduce the project objectives and activities.
3-Collect 45 fruit samples from targeted area.
4- Analysis and assess the pesticide residues in fresh tomato fruits.
5- Establish a demonstration site with an area of 500 m2, Rehabilitate the agricultural land and prepare the soil bed and provide the farmers with needed environmental tools (pests? traps, ?.) as a reference field for farmers.
6- Prepare and design of the guidance manual on pesticides (agrochemical use, good agricultural practices, food safety of products, guidelines for pesticide management, List of internationally banned pesticide) about 1000 copies.
7-Prepare, distribute and analysis of 250 questionnaires in five governorates (Hebron, Jericho, Jenin, tubas and Tulkarm).
8- Update the national; pesticide data base.
9-Implement a 40-hour training programme about adverse impacts of agrochemical on health and environment, the positive impact of agrochemical balance use in good agricultural practices, enhancing the economic feasibility of agricultural products by reducing the cost of inputs- for agricultural engineers, farmers, local community and stakeholders.
10- Participate in the TV and Radio interviews to promote community awareness about the safe use of pesticides and food safety.
11- Conduct the final workshop to represent the project?s results.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Impact

.The Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Quality Authority were involved from the project begging. They were members in the project committee who approved the project workplan, Terms of References ?TOR?, monitoring and evaluation reports. In addition to that the committee provided guidance when necessary. The grantee shared the project results with the Ministry of agriculture who will take it into consideration in their future strategies and replicate the idea in other places.

Policy Influence

Contribute to the activation of a monitoring system for the management of pesticides in the West Bank to guide national policies for agrochemicals. Direct recommendations that have been worked out for agronomist and pioneering farmers through private and public workshops. Also the project manual includes project results and recommendation will be submitted to the decision makers, especially the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environmental Quality Authority.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Presenting the results of the project, especially the presence of 12 chemical compounds remining in the fruits of tomatoes and cucumbers, and highlighting the extent of random use of chemical pesticides, in addition to field visits and establishing observations that had the effect of raising awareness on the issue of agrochemicals.

Capacity - Building Component

The capacity building Programme conducted during the period of November till Dec. 2019 which included 40-hour training hours about the adverse impacts of agrochemical on health and environment and the positive impact of agrochemical balance use in good agricultural practices in addition to enhancing the economic feasibility of agricultural products by reducing the cost of inputs for agricultural engineers, local community and stakeholders. the training was targeted mainly pioneer farmers and agronomists. The no. of participants were 56 males and 11 females. It's important to note that the training included the practical side, were two field visits were carried out. During these visits, training topics were focused on pesticide residues, soil analysis and good agricultural practices

Project Results

The results of the project aware the agronomist and farmers about how dangerous the random use of pesticides is by presenting the results of 12 chemical compounds remaining in the fruits, which motivate the participants directly to ask: what is the alternatives, which reflecting the response to the seriousness of the current situation and the urgency to seek alternatives.
1) Three targeted sites for each governorate (Hebron, Jericho and Jenin)were targeted and three replicated samples were collected.
2) Based on the Programme of field visits, 27 targeted green houses were selected and 54 samples were collected.
3) Chemical analysis for residues of active substances in fruits for about 54 samples.
4)The total area is around 1000 m2 with 500 m2 per each site, the activities implemented for each site was represented by rehabilitate the agricultural land and prepare the soil bed and provide the farmers with needed environmentally tools (pest, traps, ) as a reference field for farmers.
5) A case study published with other GEF/SGP projects in a booklet.
6) Direct recommendations that have been worked out for agronomist and pioneering farmers through private and public workshops. Also, the project manual that includes project results and recommendations will also be submitted to decision makers, especially the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environmental Quality Authority.
