Public awareness raising on climate change and ozone layer protection

The project acts towards ambitious agenda in overcoming challenge to keep protecting the ozone layer while increasing efforts to reduce GHG emissions. The project links local initiatives with larger framework SEforALL and the Kigali Efficiency Program, that launched a Cooling for All initiative in 2017. This initiative aims at identifying the challenges and opportunities of providing access to affordable, sustainable cooling solutions for all, especially in countries most vulnerable to rising global temperatures. The Project carries wide capacity development and knowledge-sharing campaign for CSOs, youth, children and school teachers through development a manual for schools. As well, the project contributes to UNDP-GEF larger framework on establishing Ozone Center.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Awareness of educators and students about the protection of the ozone layer and the prevention of climate change helps them to develop measures to combat global warming, to involve other actors in this activity, to create new partnerships in this area. This, in turn, leads to the spread of projects to protect the ozone layer, the end result of which is the fight against global climate change and environmental protection.

Gender Focus

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

To promote Public Awareness, the project conducted a series of informational and educational events to disseminate information on climate change. Printed materials were also developed and disseminated. Information about the project, its tasks and tools were published on Internet-platforms.

Notable Community Participation

Youth and children became one of the target audiences of the project. A number of trainings on the protection of the ozone layer and the problems of global warming were organized for them and with their participation. A total of 300 children took part in these events.

Project Results

The achieved results of the project:
1. 1000 sets of Ozone Action manuals were adapted and printed for use in general secondary education institutions of Ukraine. The set of manuals (for teachers and students) was posted on three powerful Internet platforms: the UNDP/GEF Small Grants Program in Ukraine, the Education for Sustainable Development in Ukraine Partner Network and "Vseosvita" educational portal.
2. A number of training events for students on ozone protection and climate change prevention were conducted in four regions of Ukraine: Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhya and Dnipropetrovsk (300 students).
3. Five trainings for teachers "Action for ozone" were conducted in general secondary education institutions (138 teachers).
4. New partnerships were established with higher education institutions, networks of civil society organizations, and general secondary education institutions (12 partnerships).
5. An exhibition was organized for the World Ozone Layer Protection Day (September 14, 2018, Kyiv, Kyiv City Council building). Awareness of more than 200 people was raised.
6. The project experience was extended to the international and national level: - at the 14th meeting of the UNECE Supervisory Committee on Education for Sustainable Development (May 2-3, 2019, Geneva); - at the conference Civil Society 4.0 (June 20, 2019, Berlin); - at the fifth national "(non)conference" EdCamp (July 7-9, 2019, Kharkiv).
