Energy efficiency measures and sustainable development practices in Malyn community

The main goal of the project is to raise public awareness on clime change issues and promote energy efficient technologies on the local level. The project purchases and installs new energy efficient lightening system in Malyn town. The proposed energy efficiency measures in the town help to save on electricity expenditures and to use the savings for Malyn community social needs. Moreover, the project conducted a wide awareness and knowledge-sharing campaign on public participation in environmental decision-making. The campaign includes round table discussions and dissemination of informational materials.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

A new energy-saving lighting system with the use of LED equipment was installed on two streets in Malyn. A total of 120 luminaires were replaced, reducing energy use and GHG emissions.

Gender Focus

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results.

Notable Community Participation

Schoolchildren and young people of Malyn community became the participants of MalynEkoFest 2019, which was held to draw attention to environmental issues and to promote the project results. Representatives of local authorities, business, scientists and the media also took part in the informational and educational seminars, devoted to LED lighting and energy saving problems.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

To promote public awareness the project participants organized two seminars and MalynEkoFest 2019, published and distributed children's book on environmental issues, and established a number of partnerships with different state and public institutions, and media.

Project Results

The main goals of the project were achieved:
1. A new energy-saving lighting system with the use of LED equipment was installed in the center of Malyn (on Soborna and Hrushevskoho streets). A total of 120 luminaires were replaced, reducing energy use threefold ? by 27,680,000 watts of energy per year, and reducing GHG emissions by 37,497 kg per year.
2. Two informational and educational seminars ("LED lighting. Investment at the expense of own savings "on February 28, 2019, and "Energy saving lighting and impact on health and the environment" on April 25, 2019) were held. They were attended by 111 people ? representatives of local authorities, business, scientists and the media.
3. The children's ecological book "Environmental Defenders Zmyshyk and Vtoryk" in the amount of 1000 copies was produced and distributed.
4. Project executors prepared and participated in MalynEkoFest 2019 ? an event designed to draw the attention of local communities to environmental issues. It was attended by about 200 people, mostly schoolchildren and young people. During the festival, the brochure "Environmental Defenders Zmyshyk and Vtoryk", and the newspaper "Development and Environment" were distributed to spread awareness about energy saving, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving community funds.
5. 16 new partnerships were established with state and local self-government bodies, scientific institutions, business structures working in the field of environmental protection, public organizations of environmental orientation, mass media, etc.
