Nutrient Recycling ? A Sustainable and Synergetic Solution to Land Degradation
The project will target two key environmental problems causing land degradation ? improper disposal of solid waste and abandoned quarries. The primary objective is to develop a sustainable model around land rehabilitation using compost. SCA will collect 1-2 Tons of organic wastes per day from grocery stores in Aramoun, Choueifat, and Khalde, and as result divert 30-60 tons of wastes per month from landfills and open dumps. The collected wastes will be recycled into high-quality compost. The compost produced is of high value in the market and can be sold at 250-300$/ton; Part of it will be used to rehabilitate 5000 m2 of the abandoned quarry site in Naameh by planting native trees, such as pine, oak, olive and carob trees and herbal gardens, such as zumac, rosemary, thyme, 7 sage, and lemongrass. The restored land will be under the care of the monastery that will tend to irrigation, harvesting, and replanting. The other part will be sold to sustain the project after the grant?s funds are used. Transfer knowledge on sustainable agricultural and land management practices to the local communities by organizing workshops, events and activities (at least 4 events); Build the capacity of a local initiative by co-developing a sustainable model for organic nutrient recycling in Lebanon.
