Threats of expansion of Pakistani Kahoor plant (invasive) and using the existing potentials
The Pakistani Kahour (Prosopis juliflora) is an invasive species that has been introduced to Qeshm Island and some of coastal areas of southern Iran. This project aims to engage the local community in controlling the threat of expansion of this invasive plant by using the existing potentials of community-based work in Qeshm Island (at present a Global Geopark by UNESCO). The project aims to select a pilot area (based on the baseline map of the vegetative cover of the island) and to implement a community-based work in de-rooting the existing plants and disposing them properly. Furthermore, local schools and other volunteers will be involved in planting native species and a group of volunteers will be involved in guarding the area from further infestation by livestock which transfer the seeds through their feces. In parallel, the project will be using the pilot area to raise awareness among local communities as well as decision-makers about the nuisance of invasive species in island ecosystems especially this species. Finally, the project will be using the trees for production of handicrafts, creating alternative livelihoods as well as recycling the wood.
