promoting sustainable production in rural areas with support of CCAs through participatory selective breeding of endemic species that are resistant and adaptive to promote sustainable livelihoods, and conserve biodiversity and genetic reservers and combatting Climate Change
With Climate Change, winters are warmer and springs are colder, periods of drought are longer, and more unpredictable. However, there is a deep local knowledge among farmers in Iran that could help build resilience against these changes. This project aims to build on experiences of a previous GEF/SGP/UNDP project in ?Evolutionary Plant Breeding? through which farmers are more capacitated to identify endemic seeds (namely wheat and barley) and use them in their cultivations. In fact the frequency of genotypes with adaptation to local conditions gradually increases and farmers gradually collect best seeds and establish their own Seed Bank which could be later shared among themselves. A website will be established to facilitate sharing of experiences.
