Fisherman/ woman Support Project
Social, economic and cultural changes taking place in the global scale are also affecting fishers, who are having difficulties in adjusting to these changes. Fishers who are unable to find effective answers to even the most basic problems either end in leaving the job or continuing irresponsibly. Main problems facing fisheries focus around declining incomes, narrowing biodiversity, organizational problems and gender inequality. The first step to overcome these issues is through establishing a medium in which they can increase capacity and communicate. The process of personal and vocational education must continue through life. The project aims at supporting efforts to preserve biodiversity, spread contemporary professional knowledge as well as eliminate gender inequality within cooperatives in order to strengthen organizational structures; thus sustain traditional fishery which has been generally neglected in Turkey. The project will primarily help realize the ?decrease poverty, sustainable development and human and institutional strengthening? initiative of SGP by supporting fisheries through creating alternative sources of income, building an organization model specific for fisher; and secondarily contribute to the initiative of sustainable fisheries supporting biodiversity.
