Demonstration of effective approaches to reduce land degradation of grasslands through use of hydroponic cultivation of green fodder
In Burzhar rural district of the Ordabasy district, Turkestan region there is an acute shortage of free plots for cattle grazing, since livestock breeding became the main source of income for the villagers after collapse of the Union. Given project proposes to demonstrate the advantages of hydroponic approach for growing green fodder to reduce land degradation on example of 20 farms of the Burzhar district. The project plans to: create a project council; establish association of two farms that will use water-saving equipment and energy efficient technologies for cultivation of hydroponic green fodder; demonstrate the advantages to small farmers; raise awareness of local communities, public and private structures.
As a result of the project activities, the following results will be obtained: fattening areas for 1500-16000 livestock will be created; on an area of 5600 hectares (17% of the total area of the rural district) anthropogenic load will be reduced; 80% of water that will be used repeatedly; direct benefits (2 hydroponic plants, water-saving technologies, training and maintenance) will receive 20 farms and indirect benefits (through seminars, information sharing, etc.) will receive 40 farmers.
