Harnessing Indigenous Knowledge for Rehabilitation and Protection of Community Forests and Sacred Natural Sites in Kilifi County, Kenya
Harnessing Indigenous Knowledge for Rehabilitation and Protection of Community Forests and Sacred Natural Sites in Kilifi County, Kenya
The proposed project will facilitate initiatives that would aim at supporting communities in experimenting, validating and presenting their own knowledge and experiences on their own terms, related to ecosystem governance and agro-biodiversity conservation. The project will strengthen application of traditional and indigenous knowledge and practices for conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in the three Kayas in Kaloleni Sub-county Kilifi County. The Kayas to be engaged directly are; Rabai kayas, Giriama (Fungo) kaya and Jibana kaya covering an estimate of 924ha with main focus being on Rabai kayas. ICE will use four main approaches to achieve target project objectives. These include; (i) eco-cultural mapping process, (ii) capacity development, (iii) community dialogues and (iv) networking with other stakeholders.

These initiatives will enable community and more specifically the custodians of culture and traditional knowledge to confidently perform their cultural practices in regard to management of natural resources without fear of cultural prejudice and stigmatization. The proposed project will also promote inter-generational learning as a way of passing knowledge from elders to the younger generation on cultural aspects.
