Empowering Mkwiro BMU (Shimoni-Vanga Seascape) to create resilient coral reefs through restoration, conservation and capacity building
The challenge that the project aims to tackle is the unsustainable use of the marine resources around Mkwiro. The primary objective of the proposed project is to improve reef health and fish biomass of the reefs around Mkwiro, thus providing livelihoods for present and future generations through sustainable management. More specifically, the project aims to: (1) rehabilitate the productive but endangered coral reef ecosystem, (2) empower the Mkwiro BMU to responsibly manage their marine resources and (3) educate the Mkwiro community on the importance of conservation.
To rehabilitate the coral reef and fish biomass, Mkwiro BMU proposes to establish and manage a CMA. In a designated no-take zone within the CMA, a coral nursery will be established with the assistance of REEFolution. In the nursery, coral will be grown to kick-start the recovery of degraded patches of reef.
