Securing biodiversity and community livelihoods through strengthening community conservancies adjacent Lake Bogoria.
Biodiversity loss and poverty are intertwined. Baringo county and particularly the larger Lake Bogoria system is experiencing massive environmental challenges manifested by insecurity, conflict over resource use, Human Wildlife Conflict and unsustainable land use practices which negatively impact on Lake Bogoria System and its ability to provide ecosystem services. The indigenous Endorois, Njemps and Tugen communities living and relying on Lake Bogoria are among the most affected.
The project adopts a community conservancy strengthening approach to secure the natural resources around Lake Bogoria and to create benefits to the local communities through strengthening 3 conservancies (Kiborgoch, Chuine and Irong) and a conservancy regional association (Baringo County Conservancies Association) in partnership with the Baringo County government.
Conservancies have developed in Kenya as a tool for creating democratic natural resource use institutions, building social cohesion, accessing benefits from wildlife and building strategies for diversifying livelihoods while protecting endangered species and securing wildlife habitats critical in functioning ecosystems. The Larger Lake Bogoria ecosystem comprising of Lake Bogoria National Reserve and adjacent community owned areas faces challenges of which the conservancies concept provides an opportunity for addressing. In this area, while conservancies have been established since 2002, weak governance and management capacity continues to undermine the conservancies ability to protect the ecosystem, exerting immense pressure on the biodiversity resources of the globally important Lake Bogoria.
This project will develop the capacity of BCCA a nascent regional association established in 2017, to be able to harness and promote good governance and conservation practices among the conservancies, build the voice and capacity of the conservancies to advocate for enabling and sustainable environment with the county government and develop a strong conservancy movement in the region. A strategic roadmap that guides BCCA to better serve the interests of the Baringo conservancies will be developed.
Collaboration, sharing of information and experiences, networking will be central strategies to develop capacity of BCCA. These meetings will be convened by BCCA, which has overall coordination mandate for conservancies in Baringo. This will build community ownership of project.
