The cage culture fishery has been created in the old bed of the Syrdarya river for the purpose of stocking with fish and restoring fish stocks in the deltaic lakes and the Small Aral Sea. This is the first cage culture fishery in the region.
In spring, the established cages are populated with fish juveniles rescued from the downstream of the Kokaral dam. The Zhivaya Ryba (live fish) tanker truck, purchased under the project and equipped with an aerator, is used for reclamation work (it helps to improve the survival rate of fish juveniles during transportation by 80% compared to tanks without an aerator).
The fish juveniles kept in the cages are fed up to 300-500 grams. In October, they are sold to nature users for stocking their plots with fish by the price of KZT 400 per one fish.
Stocking of water sources with fish is part of sustainable management of natural resources and helps to decrease the biodiversity suppression.
The reclamation works to rescue fish juveniles in the downstream of the Kokaral dam were carried out jointly with nature users, representatives of the fish inspection, KazSRI of Fish Farming and fishermen.
In total for the period of 2019-2020, 28,900 fish juveniles of carp and common carp were put in the cages, more than 160 thousand baby fishes were released into the lakes.
Loss in cages per season averaged 5-15%.
The grown young fishes were sold to local fishermen for the purpose of stocking with fish of 5 lakes and 3 sections of the Aral Sea. In total, in 2019, 23,880 units of carp and common carp from cages were stocked into lakes and areas for further nursery.
Energy-efficient pyrolysis ovens were installed in the fishing village of Karateren, which improved the living conditions of 60 fishermen working in remote fishing areas, and also contributed to the reduction of timber extraction for heating purposes. Saving the cost of heat consumption (coal purchase) is KZT 236,000 per year. The demonstration of the pyrolysis ovens increased the interest of 540 fishermen from the other 18 sites in replicating the experience.

The project was attended by representatives of the World Bank, IFAS, the Barsakelmes Nature Reserve, as well as nature users, representatives of the Department of Natural Resources, fish inspectors, the deputy akim of the Kyzylorda region and the akim of the Aral region.
The regional akimat received proposals for the development of a fishery program in the region. The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the Kyzylorda region plans to include the development of a project for the introduction of cage culture fishery, the experience of stocking with fish of lakes and plots and the development of workshops for fish juveniles breeding into the fish farming development plan for 2021-2030 for the Kyzylorda region. The presence of subsidies from the state should have a positive effect on the replication of experience.

Within the framework of the project, 7 job places were created in the cage farm (fish farmers-1, workers -5, with 2 women among the latter, driver -1)
