The project title ?Establishing Fruit Orchards/Vegetable Garden for Women to Improve Food, Human and Environmental Health in Badakhshan? established fruit orchards in Wakhan National Park for the indigenous communities benefited around 2,898 people in 4 villages. The fruit varieties planted included apple, apricot, mulberries, almond and cherries. The local women leant to utilize the fruit orchard plots for dual purposes where besides the fruit plants women also grow vegetables under the newly planted fruit trees. Growing vegetable on the fruit garden plots proved very successful as it provides the much-needed fertilization of the plants, timely care in pest control, weeding and water supply to vegetable keeps the plots healthy and benefits the fruit plants too. As the fruit gardens are protected by enclosure it helps protecting the vegetables from livestock and environmental hazards. The fruit orchards established with the help is SGP are growing well and will start bearing fruits in the next spring.
