Project Results:

Describe to what extent the objectives of the Agreement were accomplished:

Objective -1: Establish a network of Environmental Community in 200 urban communities as legal institutions to serve as a hub for provincial-wide joint action and provide a representative constituency for constructive dialogue with government in local-level environmental planning and policy development.

Results-1:
? 200 local environmental committees established in the urban districts of Jalalabad City in Nangarhar province.
? The 200 local environmental committed are registered in the Citizen Charter Afghanistan database of municipal deputy ministry section of Independ Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG).
? The 200 local environmental committees have screened over 200 community infrastructure projects for environmental and social safeguarding in their localities.

Objective - 2: Promote the celebration of the International Environmental Days in collaboration with environmental committees and provincial government; and providing them with awareness training programs to promoting their linkages with local government for advocating the measures to consider for implementation of pro-environmental planning & policies.


Results - 2:

? 12 International Environmental Related Days have celebrated by environmental committees in close coordination and partnership with NEPA, MAIL, MoEW and local governance authorities. The local medial made the coverage of these celebration including NEPA and FGEO staff.
? The publishing of 2000 Awareness booklets about World Environmental Days are in progress and soon will be distributed among stakeholders in Eastern region.
? 24,000 awareness and training brochures (1000 per each environmental day for 200 local committees have been given to committee leaders to explain and disseminate to local people in their localities. This means each environmental committee received only 20 brochures per environmental day.

Project Benefits

The immediate benefits of this project are the availability of 200 local environmental committees in the CDCs localities that engaged in preparation and implementation of local level environmental protection and natural conservation action plan in the localities. These committees are equipped with awareness and empowerment knowledge and are cable to provide awareness training about various issues and themes of main environmental days to other CDCs.

The long-term benefits of this project are the consideration of environmental mitigation and adaptation prior implementation of community infrastructure projects in the CDCs. This culture has been promoted by CCAP and this project empower the community to understand the root-cause of environmental degradation. Most importantly, the 200 committees have established their network at the Gozar level and they are in close contact with key sectoral department such NEPA, MAIL, MOEW, municipality, MoPH and share their concerns and provide them supports and consultation. The preparation and distribution of environmental books will leave more strengths to this projects and environmental committees leaders that they will remembers the world environmental days and how to celebrate them in their locality. In Finally, the project will contribution in environmental conservation in the province with active participation of local communities.
