Hidden Treasure of Edremit Bay
Within the scope of the project, more effective protection of the Red Corals at the Çiçek island of Ayval?k in the Edremit Bay is targeted. These corals exsisted here for over 150 years. Mapping and marking of these Red Coral reefs by the coordinates with depths is the purpose for preservation. Around the Red Corals bottom tackles will be installed with attached flagged buoys will be placed. With his method determination of the locality, enhancing their present status and protection will be achieved. Then Red Coral life will be able to exist with protection from destructional activities in this area. To contain the region for this purpose, action requires at the Agriculture and Forestry Ministery level. These are, according to the obtained data from the field activities with our partners, includes working together with the NGO?s in the area, fishery cooperatives, sea products cooperatives, diving schools and local people on the 2018-2020 action plan after reviewing the exsisting plan. A report will be produced and presented to the ministery and the municipality. This report will indicate the initiatives required to be taken for the direct and indirect effected bodies and entities.
Public, local administrations and the government related units will be made aware of the activities via social media, press, etc. on the urgent measures need to be taken for the protection of the Red Corals. New administration plan will be prepared under the influence of the data gathered on the Red Corals with the participation of the local public, sea products cooperative, diving schools/clubs and related individuals. A photograph exhibition will be set up for the highly populated summer season to make the public and vacationeers aware of the status. Info flyers will be made distributed during the high season on the protection area, the reason and the protection of the sea ecological sysytem. In addition to these activities, local municipality, education ministry local administration and our association will arrange seminars for the elementary and junior high school students for informing the youngsters on the importance of Red Coral Reefs protection and sea ecological systems. Workshops will be set up for the fishermen and the local diving schools to deliver the gathered data.
